How To Eat Healthy On A Budget
The struggle to eat healthier is real. There is no dollar menu at your local Whole Foods. If you want higher quality food it comes at a higher price. Fortunately, we did some research and found some simple ways to eat healthier without requiring the annual income of a neurosurgeon.
Meal-Planning Pays
Going to the grocery store without a list can be dangerous. There are too many opportunities to impulse buy things you want, but don’t necessarily need. Plan your healthy meals for the week, write down what you actually need, and stick to the list. That way you won’t be tempted to buy a few pints of the latest Ben & Jerry’s flavors or slip a family-size bag of Cool Ranch Doritos into your cart.
Buy Healthy Food In Bulk
Stocking up on healthy non-perishable items is a smart way to save at the register. Brown rice, millet, barley, dried fruit, and oats can be used in a variety of healthy meals and are available at bulk food stores for a fraction of the price that regular grocery stores charge. Plus, they’ll keep for a long time if you store them in air-tight containers. Just be sure to resist the temptation to stock up on gummi bears and M&Ms, which are also available at bulk stores.
Stick To Store Brands
The grocery store industry has evolved. Store brands are no longer considered inferior to their name-brand counterparts and they often cost less! Don’t forget to pay attention to the amount or measurement to determine which one is the better deal. Many warehouse clubs have store brands that are even more popular now than the name brands!
Use your freezer to preserve and extend the life of your food. Whether you’re meal prepping, buying veggies, or buying bulk foods, almost anything can be put in your freezer and thawed out later. Be sure to label any leftovers with the date they were frozen for best results. Also, research the best ways to freeze certain items, including fruits, vegetables, soups, or chili for best results. In some cases you can slightly undercook dishes, freeze them right away and then finish cooking at a later time.
