Mastering Mindfulness For Better Health

Eating healthy, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water will certainly improve your physical health, but it won’t necessarily make you a happier person. Living mindfully is the best way to put you in a good mood and keep you there. Mastering life’s little complications and frustrations so that at the end of the day you’re in a good place physically, mentally, and socially.

Accept That You Will Have Stress in Your Life

Instead of being in control of our minds, we often feel that they are controlling us. The first step towards mastering mindfulness is to simply be aware of the things that cause stress in your life. Accept that there will be traffic slowing down your commute. Appliances eventually break and need repair. There will always be bills to pay. The secret is to keep cool under pressure. Start by taking a deep breath and try and shut down all of the distractions. You can do this by meditating, through controlled breathing and stretching, or by taking a walk on a long trail or through a park. This helps clear the mind so you can make the best possible decisions.

 Feel Your Feelings

It’s ok to be sad, disappointed, angry, frustrated, jealous, or whatever you may be feeling at the time. Unpleasant emotions are part of the moment, but if you accept and understand them, you’ll have more control over how they are processed. A 2007 study from researchers at the University of Toronto and the University of Minnesota evaluated participants engaged in mindfulness practice and recorded their responses to emotionally upsetting pictures. They found that mindfulness helped participants disengage from the pictures and focus on another cognitive task.

Use Your Creativity

Taking a break from an emotionally heavy situation to do something creative can be fun and therapeutic. Do something easy on the mind, like painting or drawing, surfing, basketball, photography, etc. Doing something you enjoy, keeps your mind engaged, and puts space between your situation and your reaction. This can help you avoid spiraling down into a vortex of negative thoughts, which influence your emotions and potentially your speech and behavior.

Practice Staying Calm Under Pressure

Instead of waking up 5 minutes before you have to leave for work, set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual. Use the time to wake up gently and ease yourself into the day. You can even listen to a short meditation on YouTube and Spotify and through mobile apps such as Calm, Headspace, 10% Happier, and more. The more you get into good habits of being mindful, the easier it is to accomplish.

Spend Time Outside

You don’t necessarily need to go camping for 2 weeks in the Grand Canyon to achieve mindfulness. Start by taking a walk around your neighborhood, connect with nature on a trail or path and observe, observe, and observe some more! The best way to reset is to be mindful of what you see, hear, smell, and feel while on your walk.

Take One Task At A Time

What word do you associate with productivity? It’s most likely “multi-tasking.” Studies have shown that doing more than one thing at a time increases the possibility of mistakes and takes longer than doing tasks separately. Focus on doing one thing at a time, take a short break, and then pick up where you left off. You’ll feel better and most likely improve your performance.
